Title: ANVIL CHORUS

Description: Anvil Chorus is a straight-ahead hard swingin' chart (quarter note=240) rescored for mini-big band. Anvil Chorus was originally written by Giuseppe Verdi in 1853 as part of his opera La Traviata. During WWII arranger Jerry Grey penned it for Glenn Miller's Army Air Corps Band as a featue for drummer Ray McKinley. Anvil Chorus has everything you want in a chart: excitement, a fast-grooving tempo, lots of solos including the drums, a soli and tutti section, and a feel that makes you want to get up and dance. This chart is an excellent opener or closer. I have played this chart for over 25 years and it is one of those charts that is a crowd pleaser wherever and whenever you play it. Soloists: Trumpet, piano, tenor sax, and drums (and optional solos from the band if desired by the director). Instrumentations: Two trumpets, one trombone, one alto, one tenor, one baritone sax, Rhythm section: piano, string bass, guitar, and drums. No doubles.

Title: BARE YOUR SOUL

Description: As recorded on John Daversa's "Live at Catalina's", this is a jazz ballad enabling a sensitive jazz trumpet solo. There is an a cappella development section for the winds that alludes to classical sensibilities as well as a lyrical written solo for the lead trumpet which goes up to written high G. There are some surprising moments in this piece, as the ensemble plays subito fortissimo stabs, going from extreme soft to extreme loud. Key: Eb Major.5,5,4,G,P,B,D.

Title: BASICALLY LONG JOHN

Description: Basically Long John is an exciting medium swing guitar feature based on G blues. What did you expect, E blues? Dave wrote this chart spcifically for his good friend, John Sterling, a great all round guitarist with whom he has worked with for over 2 years.
This is a very exciting chart for the band and the audience. You must have a guitarist who is willing to put it on the line. Specifically, they must be able to read the written lines and play chord changes. This is a chance for them to step up to the plate and make it happen!
The introduction begins with the traditional guitar solo and rhythm section over an open 12-bar blues vamp (swing jazz blues). The soloist should not go over the top right away, but must still be exciting, since the main solo will happen later on in the chart. The melody is played next by the guitar in a "Herb Ellis" style, followed by stopped-time horn section under the guitar solo.
This is followed by a challenging tutti section. After that, it is time for the guitarist to show-off his or her stuff with an open solo section including horn backgrounds played on cue. There is a challenging sax soli and two choruses of a tutti section. The second chorus modulates to A-flat from the original key of G.
The recapitulation modulates back to G with guitar playing the melody. And of course after the recapitulation there is a guitar cadenza. Trumpet highest note C5 -two octaves above middle C. 4trpts,4trbns,2altos,2tenors,1bari,rhythm,sologuitar,vibes,piano,bass,drums.
edium difficult.

Title: BB

Description: This up-tempo jazz piece starts with a tutti which spins off into a division of the ensemble into unisons which spell a main motif for the piece. The middle section of the head has the soloist (to come), trumpet and the 2 altos, improvising simaultaneously. During the development section, the two altos trade 8's, then 2's over two choruses. The trumpet solos by himself over a rhythm ositinato. The saxes are featured on a substantial soli section before the piece builds to a climax, recapping the main theme. A roaring finish concludes. Solos: both altos, trumpet. WW1 - soprano saxophone, alternate alto part provided. Optional parts for French horns (alternate parts for Tpt 5-6 provided), tuba and percussion (mallets and hand percussion).Trpt high note is C#.5,4,2FR.Horn,4,Tuba,G,P,B,D. Medium Difficult.
