Title: BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC

Description: Also known as “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory,” and “Glory Hallelujah,” this extremely popular American patriotic song makes a return for your little big band. This ballad treatment is reminiscent of Neal Hefti’s classic arrangements for the Count Basie Orchestra. A moderate lead trumpet range, fully notated bass part, and ample 16-bar blues form solo opportunities in both the tenor sax and optional guitar parts contribute to its accessibility. Flugelhorns are optional and muted shadings add to the orchestration’s color. From a rousing shout chorus emerges a reflective conclusion. With a few improvised solo choruses, “Battle Hymn of the Republic” weighs in at five to six minutes. A/T/B/2 Trpt/1 Trom/P/B/D/G. Trpt. range A5.Medium.

Title: BILL BAILEY WON'T YOU PLEASE COME HOME

Description: This 1902 composition served as a transition tune from ragtime to traditional (trad) jazz. Originally written in 2/4 in the key of G, it became a trad standard, in F, most often played in up tempo 4/4. It also has a rarely performed verse as well as the well-known chorus. This arrangement includes both, and begins with the lesser known verse. It starts in the key of F and modulates to the original key of G for the final chorus. Hughie Cannon also wrote the lyrics, which undoubtedly contributed to this tunes vast popularity. Lead bone to high C, other ranges are moderate. This inventive romp slides and glides from ragtime, to modern jazz and even a jazz waltz. It requires no improvisation. Medium.

Title: BLUE AFTER TWO

Description: Recorded on the John Fedchock New York Big Band's CD No Nonsense, Blue After Two is a slow blues, with subtle sophisticated harmonies placed over an after-hours roadhouse 12/8 groove. After the subtle opening, the chart heats up with solos by alto sax, trombone and bass, and features powerful ensemble passages, along with an accapella chorale section with the horns, all culminating in a down and dirty ensemble shout. Trumpet 1 to written High F. 5/4/5/P/B/D. Difficult.

Title: BLUES DU JOUR

Description: Blues du Jour was designed to be a flexible piece, enabling you to feature just about any soloist in your jazz ensemble. The solo beginning at measure 33 may be played by 4th Trumpet, 2nd Alto, or 2nd Tenor. The solo at bar 77 may be played by 2nd Trombone, 1st Tenor, or Baritone Sax. The chart may also begin with rhythm section blues choruses (piano, bass, or guitar solos) with the top of the score playing on cue. The backgrounds at bar 53 have been written in such a way that each section's background figure may be played by itself or in combination with any or all of the other section backgrounds. A layering of these figures (saxes, trombones, then trumpets) creates a nice gradual building of intensity leading into the next ON CUE section at bar 65. The concept at bar 101 is similar in that the sax figures may be played independently, later adding the brass for the final build to bar 113. With all the possibilities, this blues tune can be completely different each time it is performed. Do your best to be creative with it, truly making it a BLUES DU JOUR. Trpt. 1 to written high E with one Opt'l. double high G. 5/4/4/G/P/B/D. Medium difficult.
