Title: DAYDREAM Description: Original composition for big band and solo feature for flugelhorn. Written in a contemporary style, this ballad provides a vehicle to feature your jazz trumpet soloist, as well as full ensemble. Primarily adhering to the ballad tempo of quarter = 64, this chart demands a delicate, lyrical interpretation from the entire ensemble. Stark harmonies combine with lush orchestration (including brief flute doubling for the alto and tenor players) that envelops the warmth of the flugelhorn melody. Following solo space for piano and flugelhorn is a brief, but dramatic double-time section over a straight-eighth groove. This section demands both careful listening and musical execution as the melodic line moves freely around the ensemble and across sections. Title: DEM BRINE SHRIMP THAT ATE SALT LAKE CITY BLUES Description: The title is derived from a campy indie horror spoof flick about giant brine shrimp attacking Salt Lake City in the mid sixties. It was a Utah thing but I loved the imagery of bluesy brine shrimp on the march. This Ellington-ish medium blues chart marches to its own beat with a straight-ahead melody preceded and followed by solos with cool riffs and big shout choruses. Challenging, but basically melodic and straight-ahead. I featured this chart in 2010 at the Shanghai World Exposition with the University of Utah Jazz Band 1, and the Chinese audiences ate it up.
