Title: ALBEQUIRKY Description: Albequirky was written for the 2007 New Mexico All State Jazz Band. A cross between a tribute to Benny Golson and Thelonious Monk, this relaxed swingin' chart (q=116) features comfortable ensemble writing, an interesting tutti line across the horn section, and a great sax soli. Solo space is provided for piano/guitar and tenor sax (trumpet would also work). This piece is a nice complement to a program with an up-tempo chart or two. Lead Trumpet: a few B's above the staff, otherwise G on top of the staff.5,4,4,G,P,B,D.

Title: BLACK RATTLE
Description: Lengthy (~9:30). Up-tempo driving ECM feel/free. Rhodes piano (opt. piano). Woodwind doubles (soprano sax, clarinet/bass clarinet). Commissioned by the University of Oregon Jazz Ensemble and premiered at the IAJE conference in 2005, Black Rattle utilizes a "follow the leader" concept. Bass trombone is the first leader: the other instruments begin their parts after the bass bone and try to "catch up." Trumpet takes over and leads the ensemble through more leader/follower moments. The tune then counts off into an aggressive, driving melody leading to a modal trumpet solo. The backgrounds reminisce about earlier material, but end up pushing towards another leader/follower section featuring your drummer. The original melody splashes back at the end, leading to a big finish.

Title: CHAOS THEORY Description: Up-tempo Swing. This driving, exciting piece explores changes from stability to instability and back to stability again. Quick, explosive motifs in the beginning of the piece give way to a developing ocatonic (half-whole) melody. A lush trombone solo out of time gives way to percolating backgrounds that build over time. Solo space for tenor sax comes next with a much more aggressive character. The piece ends with a solo contemplative piano drawn from ideas found earlier in the piece.5,4,4,G,P,B,D.

Title: FOUNDATIONS
Description: Foundations was written in honor of Dan Burkholder, the first jazz band director at the Univ of Texas at Arlington. This ballad is a flugelhorn feature throughout. Starting with a lush introduction with full ensemble, the solo flugel takes the first statement of the melody. The saxes take over on the bridge, paving the way for the flugel to round out the last A section. An interlude precedes the solo section which temporarily develops into a double-time swing feel on the bridge. The energy quickly dissipates, ending with lush chords reminiscent of the introduction. Perfect for your talented trumpet player! Lead Trumpet: E above the staff (with alternate lower notes.)

Title: GET 'R' DONE Description: Wtih a drum solo out front, this up-tempo swinger features modal A sections and simple changes on the bridge, serving as a great introductory chart to faster playing without all the complicated chord changes that tend to go along with quick charts. Title: GOOD MORNING TO ALL
Description: "Good Morning to All" is the original melody from which "Happy Birthday" comes. Although "Happy Birthday" is still under copyright, this arrangement of the original melody will be instantly recognizable to your audience. A soloist part is included for Bb, Eb, Bass Clef, and concert pitch instruments. This short chart (~3:00) has a distinctive New Orleans Second Line feel, and is perfect for a celebratory occasion. Title: GOZAR
Description: Commissioned by the Westwinds Jazz Orchestra in Calgary, Gozar is a high-energy chart with a 12/8 Afro-Cuban feel. Starting with open solo space for percussion or drumset, the bass enters with an ostinato that sets up the melody. The solo changes are written for trombone, but the chart lends itself easily to any soloist. After the solo section, the ensemble returns with a development-type section, followed by a brief return to the melody. An ostinato pattern rounds out the tune, completed by a surprising soft ending. Title: HAVING BUILT IN DEEPER WATER
Description: Medium tempo. straight eights in 3/4. Woodwind doubles (clarinet/bass clarinet). One of Dan's most popular (and most performed) pieces! Starting off with pedal point C in the bass, this lush piece develops organically over time, presenting evolving representations of the same initial idea. Substantial solo space for the soprano sax and guitar and a nice overall shape to this piece make it an ideal program complement to straight-ahead swing pieces.

Title: JOTMA Description: This chart was commissioned by the Univ of Texas at Arlington Jazz Orchestra for their performance featuring trumpet player Ron McCurdy and drummer Adonis Rose at the 2008 Texas Music Educator's Convention. This chart showcases a medium-uptempo "Caravan"-like latin groove, with lots of solo space for the drummer as well. A high-energy chart that works great as a concert opener or closer. Also included are solo parts in Eb, concert pitch, and bass clef if you would like to feature a different member of your band. Trpt. to F# above staff. 5,5,4,P,B,D.

Title: MINEYO (Samba Min)
Description: Mineyo (Samba Min) was written by saxophonist Tim Ishii for his daughter. The arrangement remains faithful to the playful nature of the original tune, with solo space for anyone in the band. Beginning with an explosion of energy, the arrangement quickly settles down into a paired-down treatment of the melody. As the second time through the melody approaches, the full ensemble joins in the fun. Next comes solos, a shout section, open solo space for your drummer or percussionist, and a retun to the melody for an energetic finish. This arrangement works great as a concert opener or closer! Lead trumpet: E above the staff (once - other than that it stays at a C or lower.)
