Title: MISSISSIPPI ECSTASY (IN 3 MOVEMENTS) Description: The centerpiece of Dan's big band CD, Pulse, this three-movement suite with narrator features the poetry of acclaimed poet Timothy Young. A metaphor of a trip to the underworld, the poem examines themes involving myth, descent, and continuance. The first movement is orchestral in nature and highlights woodwind doubling work as well as extended piano work. The second movement showcases out-of-time, textural sounds with an alto solo weaving its way in and out of the texture. The third and final movement reveals a driving rhythm in the piano and the bass over which the narrator and band trade jabs. Movement three also includes a piano and tenor solo, although those solos may be reassigned. Trumpet plays to a C# above the staff.Sop,Sop,Clar,Clar,4,4,Vibes,P,B,D. |

The modal solo section features beautiful backgrounds bubbling up from the surface, leading towards a dramatic push to the end of the piece.5 (SOP,SOP,ALTO,TEN, BASS CLAR), 4,4,G,P,B,D. |

Title: PULSE
Description: "Pulse" was commissioned by the jazz program at Virginia Tech. Although this chart is a guitar feature, the solo part will work well for vibraphone, saxophone, or trumpet as well. This chart starts with a "pulsing" figure in the brass section and breaks into a funky, rock-influenced groove, over which the melody statement ensues, giving way into the solo section. The pulse figure returns near the end of the chart over which a hinting of the original melody appears. This chart is medium difficult for your band, but solo part is difficult (q=132). Trumpet to Bb above staff. |

Title: SPLIT-ROCK Description: Up-tempo swing. This high-energy big band piece starts off with a full ensemble shout and drops its energy down into a short piano solo. The band then enters with fragments of the main melody, using bold dynamic gestures and sharp attacks to highlight drum work. After a large build-up and statement of the tune, a tenor solo ensues with plenty of space and well-integrated backgrounds. Next comes an open drum solo after which the melody returns. This piece ends with a final burst of energy making it a great closer. |

Title: TIME OF RECKONING, A
Description: Commissioned by the Nova Jazz Orchestra in St. Paul, MN, "A Time of Reckoning" is a piano feature, with additional solo space for guitar or vibes. This chart continues the long tradition of pieces based on the Dies Irae chant, with a hard driving feel in the rhythm section and great ensemble writing. A great chart for getting your woodwinds going on doubles, as the parts are not too technical. Woodwinds: soprano, flute, clarinet, alto, bass clarinet. Trumpets are in flugels, but the parts will work on trumpet as well. Med up with a two feel (h=116). Trpt to E above staff. |

Title: TUNNEL VISION
Description: "Tunnel Vision" was commissioned by the Keokuk High School Jazz Program in Keokuk, IA. This chart makes a great complement to straight-ahead swing tunes with its straight-eighth, cross-stick groove. A nice way to feature your bass trombonist and bassist with a soli in the second half. Although the chart contains a clarinet and bass clarinet part, tenor sax and bari parts are included as well. Solo space for trumpet and trombone. Medium level (q=132-144). Trpt. to D above staff. |
